Adaptive design with soul — shaped by memory, time, and place.

My work explores the tension between memory and transformation, crafting environments that feel both rooted and unexpected.

Eliza Marris is a designer originally from Philadelphia and currently based in Providence, Rhode Island. She is pursuing a Master of Design in Interior Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, where her work focuses on adaptive reuse, material presence, and the ethical dimensions of space.

With a background in philosophy from Temple University and early experience in the finance industry, Eliza brings a layered perspective to design—one that values critical analysis as much as intuition. Her interest in environmental ethics and the metaphysical qualities of natural materials informs an approach that is both conceptually rigorous and materially sensitive.

She is drawn to work that asks questions about how we build, why we preserve, and what kinds of spatial experiences encourage reflection and engagement. Through design, she seeks to create environments that are not passive, but that prompt interaction—spaces that hold complexity and resist oversimplification.

We come together to tackle collaborative proposals while also exploring individual projects inspired by pressing questions, current events, and unique challenges. Malt thrives on the energy of diverse perspectives, aiming to spark fresh ideas and push boundaries across disciplines.

MDes - Interior Architecture, Adaptive Reuse

2024 - Current

As a graduate student at the Rhode Island School of Design, pursuing a Master of Design in Interior Architecture with a focus on adaptive reuse, I explore how existing spaces can be thoughtfully transformed to meet contemporary needs. My work emphasizes preserving material presence and addressing the ethical dimensions of design, aiming to create environments that honor history while fostering sustainability and innovation.

Outside of work and graduate school, I’m a photographer and devoted foodie. Totally fascinated by the restaurant world, I dream of opening my own place someday—one that brings creativity and community together around great food, with a constantly evolving concept.
